Call accounting systems are designed to store telephone call records while applying costs to these calls and generating customizable reports. Call accounting systems can consist of either software, or hardware, or both. The primary function of these systems is to sense, record, and categorize calls based on if they are in-house, local, inbound, outbound, abandoned calls, or other types.

Call accounting systems were first used by corporations in order to allocate costs to specific departments. This is still done today, yet call accounting features and abilities have led to many other applications. Data gathered from each call can consist of the extension used, any account code that is used to designate a specific client, project, person or department, the length of time spent on the call, the number called, and the type of call.
